Tygarts Valley High
School has had a rich sports history ever since its
beginning in the 1920's. Both girls and boys basketball
were offered at the school. Most famous of the basketball
coaches at TVHS were Red Brown who is known throughout
the state for his achievements at WVU and Bill Weber who
amassed over 500 coaching wins. The first Bulldog boys
basketball team advanced to the semi-finals of the state
tournament in 1924. TVHS also advanced to the semi-finals
in 1952, 1984 and 1999. The 1987 & 1991 Bulldog teams
advanced to the quarter-finals of the state tournament.
In the spring of 1971, TVHS begin playing baseball and
again success came quickly with two undefeated West
Virginia State Baseball Championships in 1978 and 1979.
The first full season of football was played in the fall
of 1971, and there have been four trips to the state
playoffs: 1985, 1989, 1997 & 2005. The 2005 team won two playoff
games and lost in the semi-finals. The Bulldogs won PVC Division
II Championships in football in 1989, 1992 & 2005.
After a long absence, girls basketball started back up in
1974 and we are especially proud of our girls basketball
teams of the 1990's as they have been to the WV State
Tournaments 4 times (1992, 1994, 1996, 1998). The Bulldogs again
made the state tournament in 2003 when they made it to the semi-final
game.
Our cheerleading squads have won the Potomac Valley
Conference Championships in 1991, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 & 2006.
Track was started in 1993 and in spite of the lack of
real track to practice on, our boys & girls teams
have again experienced early success in winning the PVC Boys Championship in 1996 &
1997 and the PVC Girls Championships in 1998, 2006 & 2007. They have
represented TVHS well in both the boys & girls
regionals and state track meets. The Bulldogs have produced 3 state
champions at the State Track Meet, Monica Wamsley(05) and Ciara
Riggleman(07) in the high jump and Keith Currence(07) in the
400. The TVHS golf team hit
the links for the first time in 1999. The golf team won
the Division II PVC Championship in the fall of 2003.
Golfers have represented TVHS at the State Meet in 2003, 2004 & 2006. Volleyball was added as a girl's sport in the
fall of 2000. Girls Softball was added in the spring of
2005.
Today students can compete on the following athletic
teams: football, boys and girls basketball, baseball,
track, golf, volleyball, softball and cheerleading.
