We, at Taylor County Middle School, want to see every child succeed and be promoted at the end of each school year.  Letting students and parents know in advance the requirements for promotion is one way of assuring students meet success.  We know that every child will not pass every subject.  However, many students "give up" when they believe that they will fail their current grade, and therefore do fail that school year.  We hope that the following policy will help you and your child understand what is necessary for promotion here at Taylor County Middle School.

Middle Childhood Promotion/Retention Guidelines

Any student who fails to pass sixty percent (60%) of his/her total class load will be referred to the Retention Committee for final action.  The Retention Committee will be comprised of the student's current teachers plus an administrator.  The 60% consists of semester averages to be calculated by all of his/her teachers.  Federal and State mandates will supersede this policy.

  Retention Committee Guidelines

  Sixty percent examples:

1) A student with 5 core classes plus creative arts receives 12 semester grades.  Sixty percent of 12 is 7.2, so this student will have to pass 7 of the 12 semester grades to be promoted.

2) Another example would be a student with all of these classes plus a resource class. This child would receive 14 semester grades. Sixty percent of 14 is 8.4, so this student would have to pass 8 of the 14 semester grades to be promoted.
