Grades 3-5 Skills: Numbers and operations. (order of operations) Multiplying Meanings In this eight-lesson unit, from Illuminations, students explore the many meanings of multiplication (skip counting, repeated addition, sets, arrays, number line, cross products of sets and balanced equations). They also learn about the order property, the multiplicative inverse and the results of multiplying by 1 and by 0. In addition, students write story problems in which the operation of multiplication is required. Opportunities to connect with literature are presented in four of the lessons.

Grades 3-5 Skill :Prime factorization The Factor Game In this Illuminations lesson, students play the Factor Game, which engages students in a friendly contest where strategies involve distinguishing between numbers with many factors and numbers with few factors. Students are then guided through an analysis of game strategies and introduced to the definitions of prime and composite numbers.

Grades 3-5 Skill: Least common multiple Happy Birthday to You This lesson plan, from the Successlink Web site, helps students practice finding the least common multiple. Students are asked to plan for a birthday party that meets certain criteria: they can invite as many people as they like, but must purchase supplies from a certain vendor and cannot waste any materials. In addition, students must explain their choices and calculate the cost of the party. A three-point rubric is included for assessment.

Grades 3-5 Skill: Geometry Exploring Turns In this lesson, one of a multi-part unit from Illuminations, students explore the geometric transformation of rotation. They create a design and then, using turns, make a four-part paper "mini-quilt" with that design as the basis. While the formal term is "rotation," the more informal "turn" is used at this grade band. The experience focuses students' attention on the changes the geometric transformations make in a student-designed quilt square. Students create a design and then, using flips and slides, make a four-part paper "mini-quilt" using that design as the basis. While the formal terms are "reflection" and "translation," the more informal terms "slide" and "flip" are used at this stage. The experience focuses students' attention on the changes these geometric transformations make in a student-designed quilt square. Grades 3-5 Skill: Fractions Pumpkin Pie For All This lesson from SCORE Mathematics, reviewed for grades 3-5 by Illuminations, presents a problem dealing with fractions and proportional reasoning. Students are given a recipe for pumpkin pie that makes one pie. They are asked to determine how the recipe must be modified to make enough pie for the entire class. Read the full review on the Illuminations site, where you can access this resource directly.

Grades 3-5 Skill: Fractions Hershey Fractions In this lesson, from the Math Forum at Drexel University, students use a chocolate bar to reinforce fractional concepts. Using a worksheet to guide them, groups of students will problem solve to figure out how to divide the bar evenly among their group members.

Grades 3-5 Skill: Fraction Pie in the Sky In this activity, from PlaneMath, students learn the four types of cloud cover, their fractional component and then assign the correct type of cloud cover to given samples of sky. Determination of cloud cover is done two ways, using a grid and estimating.

Grades 3-5 Skill: Data Collection Numerical Data In this lesson, one of a multi-part unit from Illuminations, students pose and refine questions that can be addressed with numerical data. They consider aspects of data collection such as how to obtain measurements and record the data they collect. They represent and then analyze the ordered numerical data by describing the shape and important features of a set of data and compare related data sets, with an emphasis on how the data are distributed. In collecting data, students measure with standard units and carry out simple unit conversions. Click "Display Full Record" and see the Relation field for a link to the unit overview.
