Mastery Testing for Course Credit for High School Graduation

 

LUNCH

    Lunch is served in the commons area. Students may bring their lunch or choose from a full menu or salad bar. Lunch duty teachers will explain, in detail, the lunch procedures.

LOCKERS

    Students will be assigned an individual locker. Each student will sign a locker agreement which explains the locker procedures. Students are permitted at their lockers in the morning, before and after lunch, and in the evening. The lockers remain the property of TCMS and school officials will inspect the lockers when necessary.

LOCKER FEES

    Each student will be assessed $1 rental fee for a locker. The lockers have a combination lock and will be assigned to students by homeroom teachers after payment.

MOVEMENT WITHIN THE SCHOOL

    During class changes students should keep to the right and move quickly to their next class. Students are not permitted in the restroom at this time. Students are to use proper stairways designated by grade level. Students are to have a hall pass to move through the halls at any other time.

BUSES

    We highly suggest that all students ride the bus to and from school. Under no circumstances are any students permitted to drive cars, four-wheelers, or motor bikes to school. Bicycles are not permitted on the school grounds during school hours. If a student is riding a bus other than his/her assigned bus, a written note should be brought to school and placed in the note box in the Commons area during breakfast time. The note will be approved by the principal/assistant principal by 11:00 AM. Notes will be handed out during lunch. Without a signed note, the student will not be permitted to ride that bus.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURE CARDS

    Each student will be asked to complete and return an emergency procedure card. This card will be placed on file in the office. ONLY NAMES AND TELEPHONE NUMBERS LISTED CAN BE USED BY THE OFFICE. For the safety of your child, we will not permit any student to leave the grounds with any other person other than the ones indicated on this card. Those students failing to return a card cannot be permitted to leave with anyone other than parents or guardians. We may ask for ID. This is for the safety of your child. Parents are urged to notify the school of any changes in address, phone number, etc.

ILLNESS IN SCHOOL

    Students may become ill while in school. The student should ask his/her teacher to come to the office. Students will have their temperatures taken and if necessary the office will contact parents to notify them of the illness. Again, the emergency procedure card will be followed. Students who frequently use this as a means to get out of school/class will be sent back to class if temperature is normal.

(No "nits" policy) School policy requires that students infested with lice, not be allowed to return to school until all nits have been removed from the student's head.

RESTROOMS

    Restroom breaks are provided during the day. Students are not permitted in the restroom without a restroom pass.

DOCTOR AND DENTAL APPOINTMENTS

    If your child has a dental or doctor appointment during school hours, a signed note from home will be required. We ask the following information be included on the note:

  •     Doctor/dentist name

  •     Phone number

  •     Time of appointment

Students should give this note to their homeroom teacher on the day of the appointment. Notes will be verified in the office by the principal/assistant principal before 11:00 AM. Notes will be handed out during lunch. Parents/guardians must come to the office to sign the student out. No student will be permitted to leave without signing out.

END OF DAY PROCEDURES

    Parents wishing to pick up students at the end of the school day or on early dismissal days will have to wait for students in the Commons area until bus students have been dismissed. Time approximate: 3:20 or 1:20 on early dismissal days.

MEDICATION

    All medication must be administered from the office. Medication forms for students are available in the office. Parents need to sign the forms and return them with the medication in the original container. Students will not be given any over-the-counter drugs without written permission. This is the law and is for the safety of all parties.

DRESS

    It is inappropriate to wear anything that distracts from or disrupts the learning environment. Examples: Suggestive clothing or clothing that promotes inappropriate themes such as alcohol, tobacco products, profanity, or sexual references.

    Also: sagging pants, spaghetti straps or strapless tops, spandex, short-shorts or skirts (above the fingertips when hands are at your side), holes in clothing, too loose fitting tank tops, and see through tops or muscle shirts.

    Students also remember that hair paint or spray is not permitted at the middle school. Dress to be a successful student!

    Consequences: Students will be sent to the office and will be asked to change or parents will be contacted to bring appropriate clothing.

COLLECTION OF LABELS AND RECEIPTS

    TCMS collects many different labels and receipts for which we receive computers and other valuable equipment. We will keep you informed of the various labels that we are collecting.

EVACUATION DRILLS

    In the event of fire or other emergencies, it is extremely important that we be able to evacuate the school quickly. Drills are conducted frequently and are to be taken seriously by all concerned. Instructions for evacuation are posted in each room and will be discussed with you. Remember, there is to be NO TALKING, RUNNING, OR HORSEPLAY during fire drills. Your life could depend on how well everyone follows directions.

PICTURES

    School pictures are taken yearly. Students and parents will be notified in advance of the date. The pictures are usually taken during the first semester and are returned in time for Christmas. A make-up day is usually provided for students who are absent when pictures are taken.

BOOKS

    Textbooks will be furnished free by the Taylor County School System. These will be issued by the subject area teacher. Please remember that all textbooks are the property of the school and should not be abused. If you should lose a book, your teacher will not issue another book until the first one is paid for. You will be charged for any damaged books at the end of the school year.

VISITORS

    Visitors are always welcome, but encouraged to make an appointment to see a teacher or the principal. All visitors must report to the main office immediately upon entering the building, sign in, and be issued a visitor tag which must be visible at all times while you are in the school.

LOSS OF EXTRA-CURRICULAR PRIVILEGES

    Students that misbehave in after school or extra curricular activities will be disciplined through the loss of those extra activities.

REPORT CARD INFORMATION - GRADE REPORT UPDATES

    Report cards are issued at the end of each 9 weeks. Grade Report Updates are sent out at the mid-point of each grading period. Parents should feel free to schedule a conference at anytime during the year as needed.

ATTENDANCE

    Students are expected to attend school every day. State, County, and Middle School attendance policies will be enforced. Students who are absent will be required to submit a written excuse upon returning to school. Phone calls will not be accepted as excuses. Failure to provide an excuse will result in the day(s) being unexcused. Students who accumulate five (5) or more unexcused absences will be notified by the school through an attendance letter. Absences will be evaluated on a case by case basis and may be referred to a Truancy Diversion Worker. Students who accumulate tem (10) or more unexcused absences will be referred to the County Attendance Officer for possible legal action through the court system. Students are allowed five (5) written excuses by parents per semester. Additional excuses by written by parents past five (5) days during the semester may be treated as an unexcused absence. Student absences because of suspension from school will be unexcused.

HOMEWORK REQUESTS

    It is the responsibility of the student to make up all work missed. Students can contact other students in their classes and get assignments. One day is given for each day missed for making up work due to an excused absence. If your child is ill and will miss more than three (3) days of school, we ask that you  call the school before 9:00 AM and request homework. That homework may be picked up after 3:00 PM that day. No homework will be sent for less than two (2) days of absences.

    We ask that you do not send flowers or gifts to the middle school but have those delivered to the home of the student.

MASTERY TESTING FOR COURSE CREDIT FOR HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION

(Applicable for 8th grade students)

    Based on WV Board of education Policy 2510, students shall be provided opportunities to demonstrate mastery of state and county instructional goals and objectives for advancement to the next instructional level without being required to complete the regular course.

    Taylor County's mastery testing program will allow 8th - 12th graders who pass the exam(s) to "clep out" of one or more high school courses. A student interested in testing for graduation credit must complete and submit an application to the guidance office by February 1st prior to the school year in which he/she would normally take the course(s). Testing is done by RESA VII in Fairmont.
