Discipline Policy

Testing begins daily at 8:05  - Late arriving students must wait in a designated area until break and will be required to complete a makeup test the following week. Daily snacks will be provided during break time for all students.

Level I Misconduct

Definition:     Minor misbehavior on the part of the student that disturbs orderly classroom procedures or interferes with the orderly operation of the school.  These misbehaviors can usually be handled by an individual staff member.

  • Infractions
  1. Classroom and/or school disturbance
  2. Running in hallways and stairways
  3. Continued failure to complete assignments or follow directions
  4. Littering
  5. Nuisance objects (toys, cell phones, pagers)
  6. Dress Code Violations
  7. Gum
  8. Other student misconduct similar to the above examples may also serve as grounds for Level I disciplinary action.
  • Procedure
  1. Immediate intervention by the staff member who is supervising and who observes the misconduct.
  2. If the staff member perceives the beginning of continual Level I misconduct, a proper and accurate record should be maintained in the classroom and parents notified by the teacher.
  • Disciplinary Options/Responses
  1. Verbal Reprimand
  2. Behavioral contract
  3. Teacher Counseling
  4. Withdrawal of privileges
  5. Before / After / or Lunch Detention
  6. Removal / changing / covering of indecent clothing or materials
  7. Temporary removal from the classroom
  8. Parent / Teacher Conference
  9. Telephone call to parents / written notice sent to parents
  10. Confiscation of nuisance objects

Level II Misconduct

Definition:  Misbehavior whose frequency or seriousness tends to disrupt the learning climate of the classroom and/or school.  These infractions, which usually result from the continuation of Level I misbehaviors, require the intervention of personnel on the administrative level because Level I disciplinary options have failed to correct the situation.

  • Infractions
  1. Continuation of unmodified Level I misconduct
  2. Disruptive classroom and / or school behavior
  3. Lying, cheating, or falsifying signatures
  4. Profane / abusive language
  5. Indecent or inappropriate acts or gestures
  6. Defacing school property
  7. Use or possession of any tobacco products on school property
  8. Other possible student misconduct similar to the above examples may also serve as grounds for Level II disciplinary actions.
  • Procedures
  1. The student is referred to the Dean for appropriate disciplinary action/
  2. A proper and accurate record of the offense and the disciplinary action is maintained.
  3. The teacher is informed of the disciplinary action within two working days of referral.
  • Disciplinary Options / Responses
  1. Verbal Reprimand (must be accompanied by at least one other option)
  2. Withdrawal of privileges
  3. Detention
  4. ISS (In School Suspension)
  5. Behavioral Contract
  6. Special Work Detail
  7. Temporary removal from class
  8. Referral to School Counselor
  9. Referral to an outside agency
  10. Parent / Administrator conference
  11. Written / telephone parent notification
  12. Payment for restoration of destroyed property
  13. Suspension ( 1 - 10 days )

Level III Misconduct

Definition:   Acts directed against persons or property, which may have serious implications.  Some of these acts might be considered criminal but most frequently may be handled by the disciplinary mechanism in the school.  Corrective measures that the school should undertake, however, depend upon the extent of the school's resources for mediating the situation in the best interests of all parties.

  • Infractions
  1. Throwing objects that threaten the safety of others
  2. Harassment of others, hazing, threats of extortion of students or school personnel
  3. Fighting
  4. Stealing
  5. Vandalism
  6. Verbal assault of school personnel
  7. Other possible student misconduct similar to the above examples may also serve as grounds for disciplinary action.
  • Procedure
  1. Within one working day of the referral the Dean or an administrator initiates disciplinary action by investigating the infraction and conferring with staff on the extent of the consequences.
  2. The Dean or an administrator meets with the student and confers with the parent about the student's misconduct and the resulting disciplinary action.
  3. There is restitution of property and damages.
  4. A proper and accurate record of offenses and disciplinary action in maintained.
  5. The teacher is informed of the disciplinary action within two working days.
  • Disciplinary Actions / Options
  1. Referral to school counselor
  2. Behavioral contract
  3. Withdrawal of privileges
  4. Detention
  5. ISS (In School Suspension)
  6. Referral to outside agency
  7. Parent / Teacher / Administrator conference
  8. Out of School Suspension ( 1 - 15 days )
  9. Payment for restoration of destroyed, damaged, or stolen property
  10. Referral to civil authorities for action
  11. Recommendation for expulsion

Level IV Misconduct

Definition:    Acts that result in violence to another's person or property or which pose a threat to the safety of the student or others in the school.  These acts may be considered criminal and require administrative actions.

  • Infraction
  1. Furnishing / selling / use / possession of unauthorized substances  - alcohol, drugs, drug paraphernalia, look-alike drugs: any item that has a close resemblance to an illegal drug or a controlled substance for which a valid prescription does not exist for the student and is possessed, furnished, or used by a student without prior approval by an administrator, supplements, and caffeine pills.
  2. Assault and Battery
  3. Possession, use, or transfer of a dangerous weapon, instrument, or substance.
  4. Bomb threats
  5. Arson / tampering with fire alarm
  6. Other possible student conduct similar to the above examples might also serve as grounds for Level IV disciplinary action.
  • Procedures
  1. The Dean or an administrator verifies the offense, confers with the staff involved and meets with the student immediately.
  2. Parents are notified if possible and the student is removed from the school environment as soon as feasible.
  3. When deemed appropriate, school officials would contact a law enforcement agency and assist in prosecuting the offender.
  4. A proper and accurate record of offenses and disciplinary action is maintained by an administrator.
  5. All Level IV violations will be referred to the Superintendent for possible expulsion.
  • Disciplinary Options / Responses
  1. Referral to an outside agency
  2. Long term suspension ( 4 - 30 days )
  3. Payment for restoration of destroyed, damaged, or stolen property
  4. Recommendation for expulsion
  5. Referral to law enforcement agencies for action

Level V Misconduct

Definition:   Continuing misconduct and / or violations which have been addressed at Levels III or IV but continues shall be referred to the Board of Education for an expulsion hearing.

  • Procedures
  1. The student charged with the misconduct shall be suspended immediately.
  2. The school administrator will compile all information and documentation pertaining to the charged misconduct and submit the data to the Superintendent for review.
  3. The Superintendent and the school administrator shall confer to determine the final disposition of the case.
