GEAR-UP sponsors an After School Program Monday - Thursday evenings from 3:15 - 4:15 PM. This is a homework help program that is open to all 7th and 8th grade students. In a typical GEAR-UP session, students receive one hour of tutoring and help with homework. This year we have two returning Teacher Tutors, Anna Laderach and Cindy Reel, and one new member to our team, Tina Hinzman. These Teacher Tutors will work in conjunction with the Elkins High School Student Facilitators. Anyone interested in participating just needs to show up. No registration is needed. GEAR-UP has proven itself to be a valuable program and we would like to see our numbers soar!
The West Virginia PROMISE (Providing Real Opportunities for Maximizing In-state Student Excellence) Scholarship Program, approved by the Legislature in 1999, offers each West Virginia high school graduate who completes school in West Virginia with a 3.0 grade point average in the core and overall coursework as well as a composite ACT score of at least 21, or a combined SAT score of 1000 (with a minimum ACT sub score of 19 in all subject areas or a minimum score of 470 on the English section and a 460 on the math section of the SAT), a full tuition scholarship to a state college or university or an equivalent dollar scholarship ($2800) to an in-state private college. The PROMISE Scholarship is based on the student's achievements - not on his or her parent's financial resources, not on the college's resources, not on other factors. We are tying this opportunity, this investment, directly to the achievement on the part of the individual.
