Mission Statement:
To build a community of learners, I will provide an
educational and positive learning environment in which each child has the
opportunity to reach full potential in a safe and secure haven. To provide the
potential for all students to become active leaders, develop their knowledge
in all areas, instill a life long love for learning, and become a viable
productive citizen.
Recommended Appalachian Readings:
Marc Harshman:
A Little Excitement. New York: Dutton,
1989. Ages 4-8. A chimney fire during a blizzard in the country causes
"a little excitement".
Rocks in My Pockets. New York: Cobblehill Books,
1990. Ages 4-8. Funny story about a family who live on the highest, rockiest,
windiest mountain around. They are poor in things, but rich in love. ***
This book is co-authored with Bonnie Collins a Doddridge County native.
Walter Dean Myers:
Brown Angels: An Album of Pictures and Versus. New
york: HarperCollins, 1993. All ages. Myers collects turn-of-the-century
photographs of African American children. In this book, he uses them to
illustrate his poems celebrating children of color.
145th Street: Short Stories. New York: Delacorte
Press, 2000. Young Adult. This can be read aloud to fourth graders.
One Street, one block, ten stories about the folks who call it home.
Cynthia Rylant:
Christmas in the Country. New York: Blue Sky Press,
2002. Ages 4-8. A sweet picture book about a little girl who lives in
the country with her grandparents.
In November. New York: Harcourt, 2002. Ages 4-8. This beautifully
written and illustrated book invokes the sights, sounds, and smells of
November in the country.
The Henry and Mudge easy reader series is an excellent
read for lovers of animals and mysteries.
