Doddridge County Elementary School Network and Internet Acceptable Use Policy Please read this carefully before signing. Doddridge County Elementary School supports instruction through the use of educational and administrative computers, school licensed software and other media, as well as networks and servers. DCES also provides Internet access through an electronic network. Our goal in providing these services is to introduce our students to research and resources available in our global community. For those not familiar with the term, the Internet is an electronic highway connection millions of computers all over the world, and millions of individual users. Access to the Internet will enable students to explore thousands of libraries, databases, and bulletin boards while exchanging messages with users throughout the globe. With access to computers and people from around the world also comes the availability of material that may not be considered to be of educational value in the context of the school setting. On a global network such as the Internet, it is impossible to control all materials and a user may discover controversial information either by accident of deliberately. We firmly believe, however, that the benefit to students from online access far outweighs the possibility that users may procure material that is not consistent with our educational goals. Following the guidelines provided to establish the responsibilities of anyone using DCES computers, media, computer networks and Internet access. If a user violates any of these provisions, his or her privileges will be terminated and future use could be denied in accord with the state policy 2460: ‘Use of the Internet by Students and Educators’ and the rules and regulations discussed with each user. To gain access to the Internet, all students must obtain parental permission. All terms and conditions as stated in this document are applicable to any DCES network. Violation of any of the mentioned rules and responsibilities will result in a loss of access and may result in other disciplinary actions. Network and Internet Terms and Conditions 1.The network and Internet is provided for students to use, conduct research, and communicate with others. Access to network services is given to students who agree to act in a considerate and responsible manner. Access is a privilege—not a right. That access entails responsibility. Inappropriate use will result in a suspension or cancellation of network/Internet privileges. The teachers will deem what is inappropriate use and their decision is final. Also, the teacher may revoke privileges at any time as required. The administration, faculty, and staff may request the teachers to deny, revoke, or suspend specific users. 2.Users are expected to abide by their generally accepted rules of network etiquette and conduct themselves in a responsible, ethical and polite manner while online. 3.Users are not permitted to transmit, receive, submit, or publish and defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, threatening, or ill legal material. 4.Physical or electronic tampering with computer resources is not permitted. Damaging computer, computer systems, or computer networks intentionally will result in cancellation of all computer access privileges. Do not create, download, or share computer viruses. 5.Users must respect all copyright laws that protect software owners, artists, and writers. Plagiarism in any form will not be permitted. 6.Security on any computer system is a high priority, especially, a system involving many users. If you feel you can identify a security problem, you must notify a teacher. Do not demonstrate the problem to others. Using someone else’s password or trespassing in another’s folders, works, or files without written permission is prohibited. Attempts to log on to the network or Internet as anyone but yourself will result in the loss of all computer use. 7.All communication and information accessible via the computer resources shall be regarded as private property. However, people who operate the system may review files and messages to maintain system integrity and insure that users are using the system responsibility. Messages relating to or in support of illegal activities may be reported to the school administration. 8.Users are not permitted to reveal the personal address or phone number of themselves or other students.
