Discipline Model of Coalton School:

Coalton Elementary School is one of two schools in Randolph County to adopt a positive discipline program as a means for teaching students responsibility and for keeping order in the classrooms.

A major tenet of the plan is the belief that behavior is internally motivated, purposeful, and chosen by the student. It is also believed that teaching children what to do will help in establishing meaningful relationships, demonstrate that consequences are rational, logical and related to behaviors, and that students will learn to make better choices for themselves.

Students become an integral part of establishing school rules and consequences to help those with misbehaviors learn and choose appropriate actions. In addition, regular class meetings become forums for solving conflicts as they arise.

The goal is to teach the students to communicate and to solve conflicts in a time of peace. As the students learn about their choices and the consequences of those choices, they, over the long term, become:

  • more responsible
  • show greater respect for others
  • become creative problem solvers.
