Fifth Grade

Fifth Grade can be both exciting and challenging at the same time. Fifth Graders are expected to do more independently and to be responsible in both their behavior and academics. Assignments are to be turned in on time or there is a 10 point deduction for an assignment turned in late. (The next day.) After that, it becomes a zero. This is school policy. The work in fifth grade can be the most challenging for students. They will be having Social Studies and Science on a regular basis, and there hasn't been a lot of background in those subjects. Also, new skills are introduced in Math. Another challenge comes from making school a priority over socialization. Students have now reached an age that peers can become more important than grades.

Fifth Grade is exciting because the students have now reached the last year in elementary school. They not only have the choice of being in Chorus, but may now join Band. A student can be in just one, or can join both. It's also exciting to be able to have a locker. Locks can be rented for the year. It is recommended that a child get a lock. It keeps his/her items more secure, and it is good practice for the Middle School. However, it is not required.

Another exciting thing is that Fifth Grade is planning to go to Washington, D.C. This takes a lot of work by the parents and would not take place if it wasn't for them.
